7 Ways to get a work permit from Canada

You can work in Canada for a specific period through a Canadian work permit or work visa. The Canadian work visa allows temporary or permanent workers, students, businesses, and individuals to work. There are several ways through which you can work in Canada. Below are some that will help you obtain a work permit from Canada.

1. Part-time work during studies

If you are studying in any post-secondary program from a learned institution and your course duration is six months minimum, you are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week. You need not have a formal work permit to work part-time with your studies.

2. Study program with Co-op

Co-op is a program that allows students to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge before graduation. Through this program, students gain access to an empirical understanding of their field by alternating working and studying. During the co-op program, you can work full-time for up to 40 hours per week.

3. Post-graduation work permit program(PGWPP)

You can gain an open work permit to work in Canada by graduating from designated learning institutions. Provincial or territorial governments in Canada approved some institutions to accept international students. If you earned work experience of skill level 0, A, or B through the PGWPP program, you can become eligible for permanent residence in Canada.

A student who has completed his post-graduation is allowed to work if they meet the following criteria.
  • They have a valid study visa before starting their post-graduation.
  • They are authorized to work outside the campus.
  • They have not worked more than the allowable hours.

4. Spouse of a post-graduate student

If you are accompanying your spouse who is enrolled in a post-secondary program of eight months or more, you are eligible to work in Canada as long as your spouse studies there.

5. Work visa through free trade agreements

Several countries, such as South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, and many more, have agreements with Canada. These agreements allow certain professionals and workers from these countries to work in Canada. If you are a citizen of these countries, you can work in Canada through free trade agreements.

6. Job offer approved by LMIA

Canadian companies that want to hire foreign nationals need to obtain a positive or neutral LMIA, which stands for labor market impact assessment from ESIC.

ESIC only issues this assessment if they are satisfied that no Canadian citizen could do the job.

With a job offer from a Canadian employer and an LMIA approval letter, you only have to submit an application form to IRCC to get a temporary work permit.

7. Global talent steam program

Canadian employers who want to hire foreign people can acquire LMIA through the global talent steam program.

Unlike ESIC, the global talent steam program does not look for the availability of Canadian citizens to do the job; the employer can negotiate with ESDC and convince them about things such as how foreign workers in the company can support the labor market.

With the global talent steam program, you need not show your proof of recruitment.

8. Receiving a job offer to care for the elderly and children

You can qualify for a work permit if you get the job offer of a child/elderly care provider.

Eligibility for a Canadian work permit
  • You should have a passport that is valid for six or more months.
  • You should have no immigration-related convictions.
  • You need to convince the immigration officer that you will leave the country once your work permit expires.
  • You will not work with an employer having an ineligible status.
